Baħar Biss Dir. Franziska Stenglin
Baħar Biss (Just sea) is a melancholic tale set against the breathtaking backdrop of the towering cliffs of the Mediterranean island of Gozo, Malta. The story unfolds around Punta, a seasoned fisherman who, perched atop 50-metre high cliffs, practices an ancient fishing method that has been passed down through generations. With a heavy heart, he lowers a traditional fish trap into the depths of the Mediterranean, sharing his reflections on the drastic changes he has witnessed. Baħar Biss prompts contemplation about the cost of the relentless march of progress and the irreparable loss of the delicate balance of life beneath the waves.

"We Utopians are happy / This will last forever"
Loosely framed by Plato's invocation of the lost continent of Atlantis in 360 BC and its re-re-resurrection via a 1970s science fiction pulp novel, Atlantis is a documentary portrait of Utopia - an island that has never / forever existed beneath our too-mortal feet. Herein is folk song and pagan rite, religious march and reflected temple, the sea that surrounds us all. Even as we are slowly sinking, we are happy and content.
